“Convergence”: SNU Senior Graphic Design Majors Shine

On Friday, April 24 from 4:00 to 7:00pm, the Graphic Design department at SNU hosted the Senior Design Show. This year’s show had the theme of “Convergence” and showcased the work of seniors, Indy Hughes, Lydia Wynn, Victor Miranda and Trey Orman. The show was attended by SNU students and alumni, faculty and staff, family members and industry personnel.

Professor Hailee Thompson who heads up the Graphic Design department is the catalyst behind the show. I asked Prof. Thompson why the Senior Design Show is an important part of the major’s experience at SNU. “The show is a time where the students get to collaborate and coordinate with their classmates. Working with a group on such a large project is a crucial step in their design journeys because they have to choose when to step up, and when to sit back. This is a great lesson to learn and prepare for their careers.”

Lydia Wynn

Senior, Lydia Wynn talked about what she liked most about being a graphic design major at SNU. “I really enjoyed expanding my art style compared to what it was back in high school.I appreciated hearing critiques from professors and other students which helped me improve and get better.”

Trey Orman

Another participant in the show, Trey Orman spoke of his motivation to to come to SNU. “I came to SNU to play baseball but really grew as an artist and digital designer through my graphic design courses. When I first came here, I fell in love with the Graphic Design Department and the students and professors I met there. It’s pushed me to achieve a new level as a designer.”

Victor Miranda

When asked about his favorite part of his program, Victor Miranda mentioned the integration of courses. “I enjoyed the tie in with other courses like video and photography that I could integrate with my design courses. I really enjoyed the emphasis on mastering the technology related to design.” Victor would like to use his degree to pursue a career in game design or do freelance design work.

Indy Hughes

Indy Hughes is a multi-disciplinary major studying both Marketing and Graphic Design. “I started as a Business major, but as a Junior, I decided to pair the two disciplines and I think they go really well together.I feel like my graphic design courses have given me a better sense of what marketing is all about. In courses like Corporate Design we’re learning branding and how to pair fonts and colors and various styles and it’s made me passionate about being a designer.”

The four featured designers will graduate on Saturday, May 2nd with some of them already entertaining job opportunities.
