For two weeks, Southern Nazarene University students may find themselves looking over their shoulders a little more than usual. With water guns, assigned targets, and the possibility of elimination around every corner, Wet Bandits brings competition and chaos to campus.
Wet bandits is an event in which students are assigned a target to eliminate using a water gun. Once a student successfully eliminates their target, they are assigned a new one. However, participants must follow several rules throughout the competition.
Students can only eliminate their targets while they are outside, as indoor spaces are safe zones. Participants must also record their eliminations on video; targets cannot be officially eliminated without proof. After each successful elimination, students receive their next target through the event’s app.
While the competition itself gives the students plenty of reasons to participate, there are also several prizes available. The overall winner will receive Airpod Pros, while the participant with the most eliminations will win a television. Everyone who participates will also be entered into a random drawing for a JBL speaker.
Last year’s winner, Colby Howard, stated how his strategy was simple. “I didn’t really have one,” Howard said. “I just made sure to never go outside.”
Despite the possibility of being eliminated at any moment, Howard described how he was more excited than nervous about the competition. “I was super excited, and honestly knew I was going to win,” he exclaimed.
For students participating this year, or those who are considering joining in the future, Howard offered a few simple words of advice.
“Try your best, be smart, and don’t get caught outside,” he commented. “Someone is always watching.”
Between watching for potential targets, avoiding elimination, and competing for prizes, Wet Bandits gives SNU students an opportunity to take part in some friendly competition while connecting with others across campus. For the next two weeks, students may want to keep their water guns nearby and remember to watch their back.
