Southern Nazarene Live (SNL) is an event many students look forward to each year. Usually held shortly after fall break, it offers students a fun welcome back to campus, along with a free chapel credit.
What is SNL? It is a comedy show where students create skits, sing songs, or make videos to perform or share with the audience.
At SNU, students balance academics, their relationship with God, and other responsibilities. SNL offers an opportunity to take a break from those responsibilities and enjoy a good laugh.
Parker Barnhart, a junior marketing major, is a student who has become well known for his SNL performances. Barnhart is involved on campus and enjoys participating in events.
When asked how many times he had performed at SNL, he said, “Currently I have participated 3 times on SNL. I have won twice now and the other time I was interviewed on stage during a special part of the show.”
Barnhart was then asked how he had won twice.
“Well, I think it’s all about creativity. You want to have a good idea [that is] an original idea and a unique idea,” he explained. “For our performance this year, we combined two skits from last year [one of them we won with] and it was something no one was expecting. It’s random ideas like that that wins you SNL.”
Barnhart was also asked how much preparation went into perfecting the performance.
“We started with the idea a couple weeks ago, but we really started rehearsing about four days before,” he stated. “We would rehearse for a couple hours a day, but it was the night before when we had our final rehearsal where the whole skit really felt perfect.”
Finally, Barnhart was asked about a moment in his skit when he was seen banging his head against a wall.
“My character hated the song playing, so I decided to bang my head against the wall to show the crowd that I didn’t like the song,” he laughed.
With creative skits, funny jokes, and music, SNL continues to be an event students can look forward to each year. Students can keep an eye out for next year’s show and see what new performances are in store.
