Across Southern Nazarene University, students hurry to class, focus on assignments in the library, or catch up with friends between lectures. In the middle of these everyday moments, often unnoticed but always present, stands a team dedicated to keeping those routines safe and steady: the SNU Campus Police Department.
For officers like Jason Knight and Matt Berger, the job centers on consistent service. “To provide public safety for the students and the faculty,” Berger said, describing the department’s mission. Yet, the reality of their work often looks different from what people might expect. From unlocking doors to filling minor accident reports and tracking down lost wallets, much of their day is spent solving problems that keep campus life running smoothly.
Berger, who spent 35 years with the Warr Acres Police Department before coming to SNU, describes the transition as “night and day.” Unlike the high-pressure environment of city policing, campus life offers a distinct pace and a unique sense of connection. “Everyone here is polite, respectful,” he said. “It’s a breath of fresh air.”
Knight, who previously served with the Canadian County Sheriff’s Office, was drawn to SNU for both practical and personal reasons. “It was closer to home,” he said. “And it just worked out. I love it.”
While the daily routine may be calmer, their responsibilities are no less important. The SNU Campus Police Department is a fully certified law enforcement agency, meaning its officers hold full authority to respond to incidents just like any other municipal police department.
“A lot of people think we’re just security,” Knight explained. “But we’re a full-fledged police department. We can help in all kinds of ways that security can’t.” That support often extends beyond campus boundaries. With facilities spread throughout Bethany and partnerships with local departments, officers regularly patrol surrounding areas and assist neighboring agencies when needed. Still, their primary focus remains the SNU community.
Building relationships is central to that mission. Whether staffing booths at student events, attending athletic games, or being visible around campus, officers aim to build a sense of familiarity and trust.
“We try to get out, be involved, and show our faces,” Knight said. The visibility also serves as a reminder of shared responsibility. Both officers noted the importance of students taking responsibility for their environment; they need to lock doors, respect faculty rules, and respect the community around them. “Small actions make a big difference,” they both explained.
At SNU, where students and faculty emphasize character and community, the role of campus police extends beyond enforcement. It’s a partnership between campus police and the Bethany police department; safety is prioritized, and respect is mutual. While their work may not be seen by all, it remains essential. Behind every late-night study session, early morning class, and walk across campus, there is a team ensuring those moments happen safely.
