A new chapter commences at The Echo as leadership passes from one editor to the next, marking both a celebration of growth and a continuation of purpose within Southern Nazarene University’s student-led newspaper.
The Echo now welcomes MaK Wilkerson, a senior mass communication major with a minor in graphic design, as its new editor-at-large. After previously serving as assistant editor, she now steps into the role with a passion for storytelling and a commitment to highlighting student voices.

Originally from Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, Wilkerson describes her journey as one marked by both challenges and times of transformation. “There were some major ups and downs throughout my high school years,” she noted. “I am grateful for the pains I have endured because they have made me who I am today.” Her decision to attend SNU was deeply rooted in a desire for community and spiritual growth, both of these which continue to shape her leadership.
Wilkerson did not begin her college career in journalism. Initially a nursing major, she discovered her love for communication through an introductory speech and communication course she took freshman year. “I found myself becoming giddy while preparing for speeches rather than preparing for labs,” she exclaimed. “I wanted to be someone people listen to and think, ‘Wow, I have learned a lot from her and understand her perspective.’”
That shift eventually led her to The Echo, where encouragement from mentors and curricium helped her take a chance on something new. “I was hesitant at first because I did not know much about journalism,” she said. “But after taking a media ethics course, I became curious and decided to try it. Now that I have found my voice, I get to help others find theirs as well.”
As she proudly steps into the role of editor-at-large, Wilkerson highly emphasizes servant leadership and authenticity. “I want to be approachable, encouraging, and willing to serve,” she noted. “I will be honest and give feedback that helps people grow.”

Wilkerson’s vision for The Echo is centered around telling meaningful stories that reflect the heart of the SNU community. “Every student, faculty member, and staff member has experiences that deserve to be heard,” she stressed. “Sometimes the most impactful stories are the ones that do not make the biggest headlines.”
Her faith plays a pivotal role in how she approaches both leadership and journalism. “Every story, no matter how big or small, deserves to be treated with care and respect,” she mentioned. “The people behind the stories are more important than the headlines.”
Looking to the horizon, Wilkerson plans to pursue graduate studies in leadership while being able to continue her creative work in photography. “I hope my legacy is one of service, honesty, hard work, love and compassion,” she professed.
With Wilkerson at the helm, The Echo is entering a new season, one grounded in storytelling, strengthened by community and driven by the lovely belief that every voice matters.
