OOPS I Arted: Bob Ross-Themed Night Brings Creativity and Community to SNU

Last week, Hills’s Res Life team hosted “OOPS I Arted,” a Bob Ross-themed night, drawing inspiration from The Joy of Painting, the family-friendly television show from the 1980s.

In case you have not seen The Joy of Painting, the show featured viewers learning art techniques from the renowned Bob Ross. It often included positive messages and a calming, therapeutic atmosphere that made it beloved by audiences.

At SNU’s own art-themed night, resident advisor Evan Rader impersonated “Bob” and led students with his easygoing commentary and graceful painting skills. Along with the art, attendees enjoyed a spread of charcuterie, fruits, pigs in a blanket, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and a variety of refreshing drinks.

As I walked in, I was greeted by the welcoming serving staff and the sound of calming free jazz music. Everyone was focused on their canvases, paying close attention to instructions and occasionally glancing at their peers for inspiration and guidance.

I asked Conner Hale about his experience at the event. Though he claimed he did not paint often, he admitted he was initially drawn in by the appetizing food selection. Even though his painting didn’t turn out quite like the example, he said he viewed it as a “learning experience” and added that he might take up painting as a hobby, calling the event “very peaceful and [a] chance to relax!”

Lydia Wynn attended because she is passionate about art and is a student in SNU’s graphic design program. She initially hesitated, asking whether she would be required to paint exactly what “Bob Ross” painted — a scene of a lake and mountain. After learning that she had creative freedom, she went off-script and painted her own original work: a painting of plush stuffed animals that came together beautifully.

Cheyenne Gaymon also said she might take up painting. “Tonight and the Winter Retreat [have] made me more interested in painting recently,” she said. “I’ve always liked Bob Ross and used his program to go to sleep, so actually painting could be an interesting undertaking as well.”

Anna Tatman shared insight into organizing the event, “I feel that tonight was a great way to host a time and space that allows our students in Hills to fellowship. Painting is a common interest of many, and so we wanted to provide a space to create some interactive painting along with food and fun!” she said.

The night turned out to be a success, bringing together creativity, laughter, and relaxation. Students left not only with completed paintings, but with memories of a stress-free evening spent enjoying art and community.
